Family Dentist InfographicWe’ve all gone to the dentist’s office, only to be told that we need to brush and floss more. There is a reason that they go to the trouble (no, not sadism). Proper brushing technique is extremely important for your dental health. Here at Seminole Family Dentistry, we have see first hand every day just how important the effects of flossing are. We go over how to brush your teeth correctly here.

Put in the Time

The average American brushed their teeth somewhere between 45 and 60 seconds a session. Dentists recommend two to three minute sessions, spending at least 30 seconds on each “quadrant” of your mouth. Remember, your dental health is heavily correlated to your overall health, so brushing is important for more than just the health of your teeth.

Hit Every Surface

Be meticulous in your brushing, methodically moving from one tooth to another and brushing them from every angle. If you need to take more time to get everywhere, do so. Hitting every spot will soon become habit. But know, even the most comprehensive brushing can miss as much as 40 percent of the surface area of your teeth, so don’t forget to floss as well!

Remember the Tongue

Many people forget to brush their tongue when they brush their teeth, but the tongue is a petrie dish for all kinds of bacteria, which can cause many problems other than bad breath. Most toothbrushes today come with a tongue scraper, so don’t forget to use it! If yours does not come with a scraper, the bristles work just fine as well.

Brush Twice a Day

You’ve probably heard this one before, but it bears repeating; dentists recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. To avoid the presence of new bacteria right after brushing, wait until after breakfast in the morning and after you’re done eating in the evening to floss.

Replace Your Brush

In order for your toothbrush to reach the maximum amount of surface, its bristles need to be soft and malleable. We have all kept a toothbrush for a little too long until its bristles hardened, but that actually lessens the effectiveness of brushing. Make sure to switch out your toothbrush after three to four weeks of use!
